Seven Ways To Charcuterie

If we remain true to its origin, charcuterie is a French word that dates back to the 1500’s and was used to describe a butcher shop that sold meat, notably pork.  That said, a true charcuterie board would only be about meats and in particular, cured meats; salami, prosciutto, saucisson, pancetta and soppressata to name a few. However today we add everything including hard and soft cheeses, nuts, dried fruits, crackers, olives and crudites.  The “board concept” has become so pervasive in American homes that all sorts of novel twists have evolved including vegan boards, desert and candy boards, bread boards, tapas boards, game-day boards and other themed holiday boards.

An ideal charcuterie board brings seasonal flavors, colors and most importantly fun to the table. While there is no wrong way to charcuterie, we wanted to share our favorite ways to create boards of all sizes and shapes. 

A Traditional Spread 

Large spreads where meats, cheeses and bold flavors come together are ideal when there are 6 or more guests. This traditional way of serving appetizers is best created with a few cheeses that range in flavor intensity, a couple of crunchy textures like crackers and breadsticks, a few of favorite meats, and finished with in-season fruits and nuts and olives. 

Glass and ceramic vessels can bring height and varying materials to the spread, while serving utensils like cheese forks and honey dippers make the board approachable to snack from. Lastly, fill in empty spaces with crackers, piles of nuts and dried fruits.

Brunch at Home

Produce Picks

Pick one or two kinds of in-season produce to be the center of the flavor palate for your Charcuterie Board. Then add foods to compliment and pick a board that best suits the spread. Artichokes have a floral aroma and pair great with oranges. As always, bring some joy to the table and match the season with the serveware.

A Joyous Noel

A little joy at the holidays can last the whole season. Build a Christmas Charcuterie with simple foods that pack a strong flavor profile: like simple crackers with a pungent cheese, or a bright homemade cranberry sauce on a rich brie. Use markers so guests can distinguish between cheeses.
